Robin Capital 2.0 - One Year Anniversary

March 25, 2024

It is built, not bought. It is earned, not given. It is hustled, not handed.

Robin Capital. It's for the founders, from the founders. Service—that's the word. Rooted deep in the why. It's about serving and supporting. Together, that's how we succeed. Choosing—it's done with care. Conviction, we build our own. No following the herd. Integrity matters. Winning, it's a collective thing. Hard work, outworking the rest. Collaboration, teamwork, partnership. The mission, the team, the purpose—there's love there.

We have a new website: www.robincap.com

From here on, it's about our founders. Unless someone asks. I'm turning to stories now. The kind about the people we're with—their wins, failures, learnings, journeys. It's their dream now. Their customers. They're building firms that matter, that make life a bit easier or even better. It took a year to check what we're doing here. Robin Capital is an entrepreneurial journey; we are learning, agile but stubborn, reflective but with high conviction. So, this is it, the foundation. And it brings a smile, thinking about the future, our growing community of great founders. It's about them. Their wins are what we're here for. So, "Speaking for Ourselves" - We're thrilled to unveil our new website! It's realizing a year's journey, crafting and refining our products, and articulating our identity and mission - serving the founders we work with. www.robincap.com - we hope the mission resonates with you.

Tomorrow

Wake up and set aside past achievements. Embrace the "let's go" mindset every day. We are a firm built on earned trust, a brand synonymous with integrity and principles—values we live and breathe. We build friendships, dine, share things, share knowledge, and have deep conversations and honest connections. Most importantly, beyond any financial success, we are on a mission to make a change.

Diverse investments and trusted relationships between leaders in a vulnerable environment. Our quarterly meetings and classes ensure founders understand and hold each other accountable, such as questioning why a decision, like firing an executive mentioned three months prior, has yet to be executed.

We share stories at Robin Cap: quality content, workshops, mentoring, and events. Every member, every story, matters. We're about those stories, those journeys. Data guides us, but it's the people and their dreams that we're backing. "You are who you hire," they say. We take that to heart, growing with the best and supporting our founders every step.

Jack Crawford Taylor started small—17 cars. No airport spots were available, and there was tough competition with more cars. But he had better service and excellent customer satisfaction. He built on loyalty, outworked rivals, and always eyed the customer's needs. That's the spirit we chase at Robin Cap—dreams into reality, passion for products, customer love, and making a real difference.

As our fund draws more eyes, we stay picky. No BS, just integrity. We remember those who have been with us early. It's a vision, a shared ambition. Like ourselves, we're looking for believers ready for the ride, the challenge, the journey, and high conviction. Superior returns will come with it and are the reward but have never been the incentive.

Now

A year has passed. It's all about unity and partnership. Our Limited Partners stepping into co-investment show how much we're in this together. Eight of our founders went further, investing in our latest investments - founders to founders. It's something special here.

But it's more than superior returns and financial success. It's about connections. A big-name US CHRO from our operator network joining an early-stage board from our portfolio speaks volumes—our gatherings, whether quiet dinners or big celebrations are about deepening those bonds.

The 'Robin Escape' in the Austrian Alps isn't just a meeting. It's mentorship, learning, and teamwork. We've lined up coaches and service partners to give our founders an edge. We're linked with angels and VC firms to ensure our founders find their perfect match. Here, a founder's call for help is answered, no questions asked.

Personally, this journey fills me with gratitude. It's not about the fund size. It's about living the mission, supporting founders, and pushing our products and services to be their best. We're here to innovate, not sell; customer satisfaction is key. I'm committed to our founders and ensuring our Limited Partners see the returns they deserve. It's a privilege to serve a community that's more family than network, this daily endeavor.

Yesterday

At Axel Springer, I was drawn to the principles, the dedication to media integrity, and the commitment to quality journalism that empowers individuals to form their opinions. They welcomed me as a trainee, recognizing my uniqueness in the value of my 'positive craziness' for a complementary team dynamic. They offered me opportunities, introducing me to the ins and outs of M&A deal-making. The founding of the Axel Springer Plug and Play Accelerator was charged with an exciting vibe, a foray into the unknown, working closely with founders and mentors like Uli and Saeed, and alongside a hardworking team including Luise and Charlotte, to build a true community. We focused on attracting hundreds of founders, creating a robust network of operators and mentors, and organizing impactful demo days and a community.

Later, I faced challenges raising funds at Jobspotting, an AI/ML company we founded a decade ago. My co-founders and colleagues—Hessam, Jan, Manuel, Davide, Isis, and Juan—were supportive, sharing their technological expertise with me. Yet, the investor landscape was disappointing in Europe; driven by FOMO, many lacked a genuine understanding of our technology and failed to build their convictions. Finding a peer, a founder-turned-investor, or someone with expertise was rare. Ultimately, we secured funding from Hongkong based Horizons Ventures, thanks to their CTO, Gilad Novik, who also invested in Zoom and Waze. This experience highlighted a gap in the European venture capital market for a product that truly understood and supported founders. I had this moment, a realization. It hit me later, and it is still an unsolved thing today.

My journey then took me to the US, where I sold Enterprise B2B SaaS software. With Jobspotting's integration into SmartRecruiters, I immersed myself in a different culture and learned from an American leadership team. Jerome, Rebecca, Prachi, Sarah, Bob, Charlie, Rob, Eric, Natalia, and Daniel were instrumental in my growth, teaching me about fundraising, sales strategies, and business expansion.

In Europe, Elina, Alice, Morgan, and Hadrien guided me through raising a growth fund for the first time, Revaia, where I learned the value of high conviction. The approach was likened to the precision and beauty of haute couture and the craftsmanship of a Japanese swordsman—no room for error. This journey involved drafting extensive memos, focusing on ESG, and navigating public and private investment sectors in partnership with Sycomore. The competitive landscape involved co-investing with, and sometimes even often competing against, firms like Bessemer, Goldman, Permira, and Eurazeo while pursuing the dream of building a significant firm and setting the foundation.

This path clarified my purpose: to serve founders. I wanted to connect closely with them, drawing on all my experiences and leadership lessons. This realization led to Robin Capital, a fund with a genuine founder DNA and a deep commitment to growth. Elina from Revaia once told me, "You will succeed because this is unique, and you are unique." I didn't fully grasp her meaning then, but now I do.

Robin Capital is about encouraging a community like the one we had at the early start with Axel Springer Plug and Play. It's about pursuing excellence with high conviction, as Revaia does, and our deep understanding and determination for technology, like at Jobspotting. It's about collective growth and leadership, reminiscent of our time at SmartRecruiters.

Robin Capital is a joint effort. We carefully select our Limited Partners, focusing on founders, GPs, and operators who can add value. Our investment philosophy is centered around high conviction and co-investment, where our founders also invest in new entrepreneurs. We are building a supportive community where success is shared, drawing on our extensive network of operators and venture partners to equip exceptional support.

It's somewhat Buddhist. We've experienced both roles at the table. We founded and exited an AI/ML company a decade ago and built a profitable US unicorn. We raised money and built teams in Europe and the US. We've been fortunate to invest in several unicorns during the first check-and-growth stages. We've been in this for 15 years. At Robin Capital, we "live in the now." When we eat, we eat; when we walk, we walk; when we sleep, we sleep. We think in decades and build lifelong relationships. We invest in who you are, not just what you do. Our commitment is true, with high conviction when we invest and no regrets. We stand by you through thick and thin. The personal journey of each founder matters to us. We're here to serve, be present, and be there with the founders and their teams. Our success is measured by the success of our community and the founders we collaborate with. We let go of ego. Life, to us, is about breaking the ego.

Today, we launch the new website for Robin Capital, marking a new chapter in our journey. This venture is unique, characterized by kindness, love, and a steadfast commitment to supporting others by sharing our accumulated knowledge. Despite the challenges of the past year, Friedrich Nietzsche's words resonate: "He who has a why to live can bear almost any how." Choosing Robin Capital may not have been evident to many LPs, but it's clear to every hardworking builder we support.

We invite you to join our community and grow and succeed together. Our vision is for our founders to succeed, forge lasting friendships, and make meaningful changes in the world. Our rooted purpose is driven by grit, persistence, resilience, and the courage to build preeminent companies.

I am forever grateful to my mentors and everyone who has ever trusted me. I am committed to not letting you down and giving my all.

With all my love and respect,
Sincerely, Robin

Thank You!

Today, I'd like to thank Laura Larini, Bernhard Schluga, and Piet Terheyden personally for their support in branding, designing, and building this fantastic new website!

You are like family and part of this journey, and your support means the world to me! Also, hosting us this year on your farm is so generous. Thank you to the team at I-AM-STUDIO!

Likewise, I needed ACE Alternatives and their fund administration to run this. Thank you, Lisa, Lucas, Matias, and Albrecht.

Thank you to everyone who supported us, from all my LPs who believed in us early to all the founders who trusted in us, to Jerome, Renaud, Lea, and Elmar, our friends and advisors, to the Operator Network supporting the teams, and to everyone who supported us with their service, from Magdalena at Pitchbird to Christian from Orbit to Konstantin from 3n.berlin notary. I had to hustle this last year, and the world didn't wait for me. I wouldn't have made it without you and many more who supported me!
